Christmas Wrap-up

It is the day after Christmas and all through the house... the church musician attempts to recover.

It was a very enjoyable Advent 4/Christmas Eve/Christmas Morning liturgy this year even with half of the organ out of operation due to an electrical short. Here are some brief highlights for those who wish to know...

The hymns/carols were rather standard so I will not list those, though the Christmas day "Go tell it on the mountain" was rather excited. And yes, I did play in a more gospel style on the piano.

The choir sang:

Psalm 96 - Anglican Chant by Henry Lawes with a response based on Regent Square (the tune for "Angel's of the realms of glory"). I have gotten in the habit of writing my own response tune to use with Anglican Chant for some days.

Offertory Anthem: "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" Elizabeth Posten
Communion Motet: O Magnum Mysterium - William Byrd (this is not the more famous one which is by Victoria, but still quite lovely.)

We also made sure we sang "In the Bleak Midwinter" - Holst - unaccompanied.

At the Children's Pageant we also had the debut of our youth Instrumental Ensemble.

All an all, a full and fulfilling liturgical marathon.

Sing-a-long Messiah solos

A scenario:

You are a part-time church organist/choirmaster in Advent/Christmas season. You also hold another full-time job to help pay for your church music career. So, what is your response to all this extra time?

Quite simple... When the North Suburban Symphony loses their bass soloist for this weekend's Sing-a-long Messiah say, "sure, I'll do it." Nothing lack last minute preparation, but it should work out fine.

And, if you must know... the performances are:

Saturday, December 9, 4:00 p.m.
St. Lawrence Episcopal Church
125 West Church, Libertyville, Illinois (click here for map)

Sunday, December 10, 4:00 p.m.
Gorton Community Center
400 Illinois Road, Lake Forest, Illinois (click here for map)

These are both north of Chicago, easily accessible from the Tri-State Tollway.

Suggested tax-deductible donations are
$10 Individual
$20 Family
$7 Seniors and Students
(donations are going to charity)

There was a pre-reservation for Messiah score rental but that is a little late now.

While browsing this evening, I fell upon a new answer to the boring 404 Error page:

Ah, Haiku for the lost, how nice. And all I could decide on for St. Philip's Episcopals website was:

"I have gone astray like a lost sheep;"
Psalm 119:176
