Hybrid cars

I like the idea of the hybrid cars in both reducing use of fossil fuels and reduced noise. An accident by my house has made me consider one unfortunate problem.

About ten minutes ago, there was a car-bike accident at the intersection by my apartment. I do not know the details of the incident such as who is at fault but the car was a Prius, one of the new hybrids. Having almost stepped in front of one of these types of cars before, their quiet nature especially at slow speeds, may create a hazard. Obviously, there would be the danger to hearing impaired people, but one does not realize how often you use multiple senses when watching for traffic. I have noticed at times, I depend as much on hearing a vehicle as I do in seeing it. This may serve as a reminder to be especially observant before crossing.

This same warning should also go to those who drive these vehicles, especially in a community with heavy pedestrian and bike traffic. I have read recently that car-pedestrian accidents are on the rise lately. I can only imagine one factor is the increasing distraction to drivers and walkers (and the occasional biker) by devices like cell phones. Drivers of these new vehicles may need to be extra careful to avoid distracting activities, especially when driving in an area such as Evanston.

This same warning should be heeded by the walking/biking crowd. Look and listen and LOOK AGAIN before crossing. The hybrids may better help our environment and dependence on foreign oil. It would be a shame to see them disappear because we need to talk on the phone 24/7.
